Art Photo Books by Joe Greene

Forbes Island, Chelsea, MA

former site of the Forbes Lofts development

Forbes Park was a plan to breath life into an old factory complex of several Civil War era buildings in Chelsea, Mass., by Architects Urban Design and Development. I was the project photographer from 2007 - 9, shooting the demolitions, the progress shots and model units.

As some buildings came down, their bricks and huge timbers were carefully salvaged and recycled. The first building being developed known as Building X, was to be a sustainable living space, with an on-site turbine to turn wind into electric power for the island complex. Seagrass planted along the new seawall that encircled the property, sparked the return of birds, ducks and shellfish to the creek. Model units were furnished, interested buyers prepared their finances, but unfortunately the project never made it to completion.

Cherubs and Demons

Bostons rich architectural history, includes images of demons and angels carved into the facades of old stone buildings. Sometimes the architect let the stone mason design his own signature dragon or cherub. These faces shot on film decades ago, are now available in book and print form.

Broadway

Chelsea, Massachusetts

Chelsea is the smallest city in Massachusetts, and is home to the largest bridge in New England, the Tobin Memorial Bridge.

Formerly known as Winnisimmet by the Native American Naumkeag tribe, Chelsea sits directly across the Mystic River from Boston and borders East Boston, Everett, Saugus and Revere. Chelsea was incorporated in 1739, was nearly destroyed by fires in 1908 and again in 1973 I moved to Chelsea in 2001 and began photographing my new neighborhood, most of these pictures were taken on ( and off ) our main street, Broadway.

This 36 plus page softcover 8” x 10” photo book shares many scenes of everyday urban living, along with some nostalgic imagery of days gone by.

I hope you like them!

Mid Century Purse Book, “First I Look at the Purse”

selected for the Griffin Museum of Photography and Davis Orton Gallery 2024 Photobook Collection

Humans have been carrying purses for thousands of years. 5000 year old Otto the Iceman was found frozen in an iceberg with his. From leather pouches to fanny packs, the ubiquitous purse from any century holds secrets known only to its owner.

I have been collecting and photographing purses along with items that may or may not have been hidden within them. Jewelry, a loose button, even weapons, all have found their ways in and out of purses. What's in yours?

Some work was shot with a 1960’s Speed Graphic 4 x 5 film camera and scanned with an Imacon. Polaroid test shots are also produced.

Ashtray Art Photo Book

was selected for the Davis Orton Gallery / Griffin Museum 2022 Photobook Competition

Ashtrays were ubiquitous. We would see them at home, work, school and in stores and even Doctors offices. Air travel had smoking sections as did restaurants.

Ashtrays are still around, but they cater to a much smaller and specialized audience. So what happened to all the ceramic art deco, plastic atomic age and tin gas station ashtrays? Well I found them and photographed them. Their designs are icons of kitch, mod, retro and whatever your grandmothers living room looked like.
