The Track

The Track wins spot in the Davis Orton Gallery / Griffin Museum 2021 Photobook Competition

Horse and chariot racing has been practised in civilisations across the world since ancient times. In France, the first documented horse race was held in 1651 as the result of a wager between two noblemen. In 1935, Suffolk Downs Racetrack opened in Boston and 80 years later, it was sold to residential and retail developers. With live racing coming to an end and only a handful of days scheduled, I decided to photograph every remaining live race day that I could.

Before each race, Groomers walk their horses on the track to the paddock, where the horses will be on show until shortly before the start of the race, giving the crowd an opportunity to view them in motion and to see them saddled.

As post time grows nearer, colorfully clad Jockeys saddle up and take thei horses back to the track and on to the starting gate. This routine takes about 40 minutes, so I had the opportunity to photograph it many times over. At the end of the race, Jockeys return to Jockeys' Room, often covered with mud kicked up from the track and the sequence begins again with eight new horses. In between races, I turned my camera to the architectural details of the clubhouse, from a bygone era.

Ashtrays

“Ashtrays” selected for the Davis Orton Gallery / Griffin Museum 2022 Photobook Competition

Ashtrays were ubiquitous. We would see them at home, work, school and in stores and even Doctors offices. Air travel had smoking sections as did restaurants.

Ashtrays are still around, but they cater to a much smaller and specialized audience. So what happened to all the ceramic art deco, plastic atomic age and tin gas station ashtrays? Well I found them and photographed them. Their designs are icons of kitch, mod, retro and whatever your grandmothers living room looked like.

Concealed

Webster defines concealed as "to place out of sight, to conceal evidence, carrying a concealed weapon, to prevent disclosure or recognition or conceal the truth". Joe's photographs of vintage purses and toy guns, act as a metaphor for the secrets we keep from each other and the fear in America right now.
